Klein ISD Enhances Safety Initiatives for 2024-25 School Year
Collaborative Partnerships for Safety
On August 5th, Klein ISD hosted its first-ever First Responders Safety Collaboration Breakfast. The event united local law enforcement, firefighters, and key community stakeholders, such as Precinct 3 Commissioner Ramsey and Harris County Constable Precinct 4 Mark Herman, to strengthen partnerships and safety strategies.
Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. McGown also plays a key role in district safety, having recently been elected to position 3 on the Harris County Safe Schools Commission.
Compliance with HB3 and Staff Training
A significant achievement for Klein ISD is its compliance with House Bill 3, a new state law requiring armed level 3 campus guards.
"We were able to start this school year with all positions filled and assigned to every elementary campus," Chief Runnels proudly said.
This accomplishment comes despite many surrounding districts struggling to meet this mandate.
The district has also invested heavily in staff safety training, completing nearly 1,500 contact hours on critical skills such as CPR, force-on-force training, and emergency response. The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) continues to be a focal point of staff training, ensuring readiness for emergency situations.
Safety Enhancements and Technology Upgrades
Klein ISD has implemented a number of physical safety enhancements, including the addition of video doorbell accept points, shatterproof glass, controlled access doors, and safety vestibules. These upgrades provide extra layers of security for students and staff. Klein ISD’s 2022 Bond has also allowed for the addition of new security cameras, radio systems, and cybersecurity measures.
K9 Unit and Student Engagement
Klein ISD also added the newest members of its police force, Corporal Grimaldo and K9 Sgt. Bax. The K9 unit is not only focused on student safety but also aims to inspire students through the newly launched K9 Student Award Program. Teachers and staff can now nominate students for awards like the Bax Acts and Quinn's Courageous Kid Award, recognizing exceptional bravery, leadership, and kindness.
Community Communication and Safety Tools
Klein ISD has made communication with the community a priority. The district’s online anonymous reporting tool, Keep Klein Safe, allows anyone to report safety concerns 24/7. Additionally, the district has shared safety updates through its weekly newsletter, The Insider, which reaches over 80,000 subscribers. Recent safety communications have been sent to over 53,000 student families and more than 7,000 staff members, ensuring transparency and community involvement in district safety efforts.
Looking Ahead
As Klein ISD moves forward into the new school year, the district’s commitment to safety remains unwavering. From K9 partnerships and physical security enhancements to extensive staff training and community engagement, safety continues to be a top priority for the district. "Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and together we will continue to keep safety as our top priority in Klein ISD," said the Chief in closing remarks.
